This subject, at first glance, may appear as trivial, but is it ? Please be patient, this is not an easy space to describe - if only I could point! I can’t think of an occasion when this subject would come up in a real house.
I have lived quite a few years with my doll house before I was even aware of how the front ‘edge’ of the floors appeared. Looking straight on at the ‘open’ side of the house. Since my own was hand-crafted, I haven’t consciously compared that specific part to any other house.
Please allow me to ponder the possibilities. . . . I’m sure the thickness of the floor boards will vary. My own sub-flooring is about 5/8 inch thick. The first thought I had was simply to paint the exposed edge the same color as the woodwork, or maybe the same color as the room above. Maybe the same color as the ceiling below. Are you following me? Then too, if you have wall to wall carpet, it could be rolled over the edge and glued.
After cleaning my real kitchen cupboards one day, I was applying some shelf border. It was white in color, self-adhesive, lacy in design and made of (what else?) plastic. I held a piece of the border up to the doll house for effect and proceeded to cut it to size - then applied it to the front edge of the flooring and it’s been there ever since.
If you’re concerned it will block too much of the view into the rooms, the plastic border could be shortened by artfully cutting the design with scissors - before it’s taped on of course. I know, you’re thinking - all that lace?? Don’t forget there are many varieties of shelf borders. Of course I’m aware that the look is very feminine and would compliment only a small persentage of all the doll houses.
I would hope this idea has stretched your imagination and perhaps made you look at other unusual possibilities. I’d be interested to know how you have handled this subject in your own minature home.
Enjoy ~
