One of the most fun parts of building a dollhouse is selecting the colors you’ll use. Exterior colors, interior colors and furnishings all work together to create the personality of the house.
It’s easy to go wild here, but we suggest staying with no more than 3 colors for the exterior of the dollhouse. If you’re feeling a little unsure, or want to expand your color ideas before making them permanent, here are some easy ways to find color schemes that work.
Historic Homes
A lot of time, money and skill go into returning historic homes to the jewels of architecture and design that they once were. Studying the color combinations of restored homes (especially those similar in style to your dollhouse) can give you some great ideas. After all, if it looks good in real life, it’ll look good in miniature. Drive by examples in your area, look online or browse photo books until you find a palette that strikes you.
Paint Store Samples
Your local paint store has a ton of color combinations already matched and designed to be appealing when used together. Paint chip cards are an easy way to see how different colors play off each other. Also, many stores have pictures of example color choices for home exteriors.
Color Wheel
What are you trying to create with your dollhouse? If you know one or more of the colors you want to use, a color wheel can help you find complimentary hues to round out your design. Even if you’re a color expert, this is an easy way to be sure that what you’re planning will look good. Check out the Color Wheel Guide by This Old House.
